How to Brush a Cat’s Teeth (& Why it’s Crucial)

by | Dec 27, 2024 | Animal Wisdom

Keeping your cat’s teeth clean is an essential but often overlooked part of their overall health. Just like humans, cats are prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. Poor oral hygiene can lead to more serious health problems, including infections and organ damage. Brushing your cat’s teeth, alongside other dental care practices, can make a big difference in their well-being.

That said, we can think of several other things we’d rather do than try to get in that little lion’s mouth and try to brush, brush, brush… so, in this blog, we’ll give you some practical tips on how to brush a cat’s teeth and some other natural ways to keep the teeth clean.

Why Oral Health Is Important for Cats

Many cat owners are surprised to learn that dental disease is one of the most common health problems in cats. And that it goes way beyond the mouth! Here’s why good oral care matters:

  1. Prevents Dental Disease: Regular brushing helps reduce plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.
  2. Supports Overall Health: Poor oral hygiene can result in bacteria entering the bloodstream, potentially affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver.
  3. Avoids Pain and Discomfort: Dental issues can cause significant pain, leading to difficulty eating, pawing at the mouth, or even behavioral changes.

Keep an eye out for these symptoms of potential dental problems:

  • Bad breath
  • Drooling or pawing at the mouth
  • Difficulty eating or loss of appetite
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Yellow or brown tartar buildup on teeth

If you notice any of these signs, consult your veterinarian promptly.

How to Brush a Cat’s Teeth: Some Helpful Tips

Brushing your cat’s teeth might seem daunting, but with patience and the right approach, it can become a routine part of their care.

1. Start Early

  • If you can, try to avoid starting to brush a cat’s teeth when they’re older – that’s not going to go over well. Begin brushing when your cat is young to get them accustomed to the process. However, older cats can still be trained with extra patience. And patience is the key work here.

2. Use Cat-Safe Supplies

  • Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for cats, or use a finger brush for better control.
  • Always use toothpaste formulated for cats. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and other ingredients that are toxic to cats. Read ingredients carefully, avoiding things like artificial preservatives, silica, or baking soda. Stay away from artificial flavours too. Keep the ingredients as simple and clean as possible.
  • We recommend our Love Bugs toothpaste recipe:
    • Mix together 1 tsp of coconut oil and 1/16 tsp of Love Bugs. Remove the entire amount you need from the jar so you do not put your finger back in and contaminate the paste. Store it in a glass jar which is good for easy storage of any leftovers

3. Gradually Introduce Brushing

  • Step 1: Let your cat taste the toothpaste by placing a small amount on your finger.
  • Step 2: Gently lift their lips and rub their teeth with your finger to get them used to the sensation.
  • Step 3: Introduce the toothbrush and start with short sessions, focusing on a few teeth at a time.

4. Make It Positive

  • Reward your cat with treats, praise, or playtime after brushing sessions to create a positive association.

5. Be Consistent but Gentle

  • Aim to brush your cat’s teeth 2-3 times a week. Avoid being forceful, as this can make them resistant to future attempts.

Additional Dental Care Options

While brushing is the gold standard for dental care, there are other ways to help maintain your cat’s oral health:

1. Raw Bones for Dental Health

Chewing on certain types of raw bones can help scrape away plaque and keep your cat’s teeth clean naturally.

  • Best Raw Bones for Cats:
    • Chicken necks
    • Quail bones
    • Rabbit ribs
    • Turkey neck pieces (cut into smaller portions for safety)

Important Note: Always supervise your cat when offering raw bones. Ensure the bones are appropriately sized and never cooked, as cooked bones can splinter and cause injury.

2. Dental Treats and Chews

  • Look for veterinary-approved dental treats designed to reduce plaque and tartar.

3. Water Additives

  • Add dental water additives to your cat’s drinking water to help reduce bacteria and freshen their breath.

4. Professional Dental Cleanings

  • Schedule regular dental checkups with your veterinarian, who may recommend a professional cleaning under anesthesia if needed.

Taking time to brush a cat’s teeth is one of the most effective ways to protect their oral and overall health. While it may take time and patience to establish a routine, your efforts will help prevent painful dental problems and ensure your feline friend stays healthy and happy. Supplement brushing with natural options like raw bones and dental treats for added benefits, and always consult your vet about your cat’s dental care needs.
