Can Dogs Eat Peaches?

by | Jul 26, 2024 | Ingredients, Nutrition

Oh peaches! Peaches are a juicy, sweet fruit that many people enjoy, especially in the summer. When they’re in season, they don’t last in our house. Almost as soon as they come in, they’re gone again.

And that’s a good thing in my book – peaches are chock-full of healthy vitamins and minerals.

But can dogs eat peaches? Should we be sharing them with or furry friends?

Can Dogs Eat Peaches?

Can dogs eat peaches? The answer is yes, dogs can eat peaches!

Peaches are a nutritious treat for dogs when given in moderation. Here are some of the health benefits:

  1. Vitamins and Minerals: Peaches are rich in vitamins A and C, which support your dog’s immune system and skin health. They also contain essential minerals like potassium and magnesium.
  2. Antioxidants: The antioxidants in peaches help combat free radicals, which we know lead to oxidative stress, thus promoting overall health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
  3. Fiber: Peaches provide dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and helps maintain healthy bowel movements.
  4. Hydration: With their high water content, peaches can help keep your dog hydrated, especially on hot days.

Things to Keep in Mind When Feeding Peaches to Dogs

While peaches can be a healthy treat, there are several important precautions to ensure they are safe for your dog:

  1. Wash Thoroughly: Always wash peaches thoroughly to remove pesticides and chemicals. Organic peaches are a better choice if available.
  2. Remove the Pit: The pit (stone) of a peach contains cyanide, which is toxic to dogs. Always remove the pit before giving your dog any peach slices. The pit also poses a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockages.
  3. Cut into Small Pieces: If your dog’s a gulper, cut the peach into small, manageable pieces to prevent choking and make it easier for your dog to eat.
  4. Moderation is Key: Peaches contain natural sugars, so they should be given in moderation. A few small pieces are sufficient as an occasional treat – they definitely not need to indulge in the same way we do!
