You’ve probably heard that pumpkin is great for dogs – and that’s very true. We always keep a few cans of pureed pumpkin in the pantry for any unexpected bouts of digestive upset, to make healthy treats, or just to add variety to our pups’ meals.
But does the same hold true for our furry felines? Can cats have pumpkin?
One of pumpkin’s biggest claims to fame is its ability to help with both constipation and diarrhea (weird, but totally true!), making it a popular natural remedy recommended by many veterinarians. Here’s everything you need to know about feeding pumpkin safely to your feline friend.
Can Cats Have Pumpkin?
Yes! Plain pumpkin can be a healthy and beneficial addition to your cat’s diet. While cats are obligate carnivores and require animal-based protein as the foundation of their nutrition, pumpkin offers valuable fibre, vitamins, and minerals that can support digestive health.
Pumpkin may seem simple, but it’s loaded with beneficial nutrients, including:
- Dietary fiber (both soluble and insoluble)
- Vitamin A for healthy vision, skin, and immune function
- Vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect cells
- Vitamin E for skin and immune health
- Potassium, which supports muscle and nerve function
- Magnesium, important for muscle, nerve, and bone health
- Iron, which helps support healthy red blood cells
- Beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that the body converts into vitamin A
Pumpkin is also low in calories and naturally hydrating – it’s about 90% water – which many cats need – especially if they eat dry food.
Pumpkin for Constipation and Diarrhea in Cats
As mentioned, pumpkin’s main claim to fame is as a support for both consitpation and diarrhea…
Constipation
One of the most common reasons people feed pumpkin to cats is to help relieve constipation.
Pumpkin contains both soluble and insoluble fibre, which work together to support healthy bowel movements.
- Insoluble fibre adds bulk to the stool and encourages movement through the intestines.
- Soluble fibre absorbs water, helping stools stay soft and easier to pass.
For cats experiencing mild constipation, a small amount of pumpkin may help stimulate more regular bowel movements while supporting overall digestive health.
Diarrhea
Again, it may seem surprising that the same food can help both constipation and diarrhea, but pumpkin’s unique fibre content makes this possible.
The soluble fiber in pumpkin absorbs excess water in the digestive tract, helping to firm up loose stools. At the same time, it provides nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria, supporting a healthier intestinal environment.

Other Benefits of Pumpkin for Cats
Beyond digestive support, pumpkin may offer several additional benefits.
- Supports Healthy Gut Bacteria: The fibre in pumpkin acts as a prebiotic, providing food for beneficial bacteria (probiotics) already living in your cat’s digestive tract. A healthy gut microbiome supports digestion, immune function, and overall wellness.
- May Help with Hairballs: Because pumpkin promotes healthy movement through the digestive tract, it may help move ingested hair more efficiently, potentially reducing the formation of hairballs in some cats.
- Supports Healthy Weight: Pumpkin is naturally low in calories but rich in fibre, helping cats feel fuller without adding many extra calories. It can sometimes be used in small amounts as part of a veterinarian-approved weight management plan.
How to Feed Pumpkin
Firstly, only go with plain pumpkin. That means either plain pumpkin that you’ve cooked yourself, or canned 100% plain pumpkin (that’s what we keep on hand). Both provide the same digestive benefits. And avoid raw pumpkin, as it can be difficult for cats to chew and digest and may increase the risk of digestive upset.
Never feed your cat pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling contains a number of different ingredients to give it that delicious fall flavour, but they’re not ones we need to share with the kitties. Only go with pumpkin.
As for how much, pumpkin should be considered a supplement rather than a regular meal replacement.
**Some cats won’t be fans – they’re picky creatures, we well know, and if your kitty turns their nose up, that’s ok, don’t force the issue.
Most cats only need about ½ to 1 teaspoon mixed into their food once or twice daily when using it to support digestion (and we generally recommend only mixing it in once you’ve got the ok with them – you don’t want to turn them off their food). Because every cat is different, it’s best to start with a very small amount and monitor how they respond.
So, can cats have pumpkin? Yes, cats can safely enjoy plain cooked or 100% pure canned pumpkin. Pumpkin is a nutritious source of fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help support digestive health. Its unique blend of soluble and insoluble fibre makes it especially helpful for managing both mild constipation and diarrhea, while also supporting a healthy gut microbiome. When fed appropriately, pumpkin can be a simple, natural way to give your cat’s digestive system a little extra support.
